Hawker Typhoon in Action - semalt

In February 1940, the first N model, now known as the Typhoon, was delivered. Like the Tornado, the Typhoon was soon demonstrating its own problems, including vibrations from the engine causing the wing skinning to peel. The first production Mk IA was delivered in May 1941 with 12 Browning .303 guns, but this was followed quickly with the Mk IB with four Hispano 20 mm cannons.By this time the Spitfire Vs were encountering the superior Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in combat and suffering heavy losses, with the inevitable result that the Typhoon was rushed into squadron service (with Nos. 56 and 609 Squadrons) to counter the new German plane. Sadly, this decision proved to be a disaster, and several Typhoons were lost for mysterious reasons. Once again there was talk of killing the Typhoon.The cause of the tail failures was eventually identified only because one pilot managed to survive and return to tell his story. The problem was found to be caused by fatigue failure of the elevator mass-balance, allowing elevator-flutter to occur which was at its greatest when pulling out of a dive. Diving out of combat was the favourite escape manoeuvre for the Fw 190, which had a distinct speed advantage over the Spitfire. Against the Typhoon this manoeuvre should have proved deadly for the Fw pilots, but flutter problems turned the tables.As a "temporary" measure, rectangular strengthening "fishplates" were riveted around the fuselage/empennage joint, the site of the failures. These fishplates remained a feature on all subsequent Typhoons. Problems with leakage of exhaust fumes into the cockpit and subsequent high carbon monoxide levels also meant Typhoon pilots had to use oxygen for even low level operations. The Sabre engine was also a constant source of problems, notably in colder weather where it was very difficult to start. During late 1942 and early 1943, the Typhoon Squadrons on the South Coast were finally effective in countering the Luftwaffe's "tip and run" low-level nuisance raids, shooting down a score or more fighter-bomber Fw 190s. The first two Messerschmitt Me 210 fighter-bombers to be destroyed over the British Isles fell to the guns of Typhoons in late 1942, and during a daylight raid by the Luftwaffe on London on 20 January 1943, five Fw 190s were destroyed by Typhoons.As soon as the aircraft entered service it was immediately apparent the profile of the Typhoon resembled a Fw190 from some angles, and this similarity caused more than one "friendly fire" incident with Allied anti-aircraft units and other planes. This led to Typhoons being marked up with high visibility black and white stripes under the wings; a precursor of the marking applied to all Allied aircraft on D-Day.The Typhoon would however become much more famous armed with four "60 lb" RP-3 rockets under each wing—the so-called "Rocketphoons." In October 1943, No. 181 Squadron made the first Typhoon rocket strikes. Although the rocket projectiles were inaccurate and took some considerable skill to aim properly and allow for the drop after firing, the sheer firepower of just one Typhoon was equivalent to a destroyer's broadside. The top speed of the Typhoon was reduced by some 15 mph by the non-jettisionable rocket rails. By the end of 1943, 18 rocket-equipped Typhoon squadrons formed the basis of the RAF's Second Tactical Air Force ground attack arm in Europe.Inaccuracy notwithstanding, the rockets (backed by the Typhoon's four 20 mm cannon) proved highly effective against many targets, such as unarmoured "soft-skinned" vehicles, road transport, trains and small sea craft. Although great things were expected against the heavily armoured tanks of the Wehrmacht, the rockets needed to hit the thin-walled engine compartment or the tank's tracks to really have any destructive effect. CAM ship is an acronym for catapult aircraft merchant ship. A CAM ship was equipped with a rocket-propelled catapult launching a single Hawker Hurricane, dubbed a "Hurricat" or "Catafighter". CAM ships continued to carry their normal cargoes after conversion.After the Fall of France in June 1940, long range German Focke-Wulf Fw 200 reconnaissance aircraft of I/KG40 shadowed and bombed merchant shipping from the French airfield at Bordeaux-Merignac. The Admiralty had already experimented with fighter catapult ships - converted freighters, equipped with a single rocket-launched fighter, manned by naval crews. They ordered 50 more rocket-propelled catapults for fitting aboard merchant ships. These were equipped with fifty Hawker Hurricane Mark I aircraft, converted to Sea Hurricane Ia's as a temporary measure to provide fighter protection beyond the range of bases on the British Isles. The ship was not fitted for aircraft recovery, so, unless close to land, the pilot would bail out or ditch in the sea at the end of the flight and the plane would be lost.The RAF formed the Merchant Ship Fighter Unit (MSFU) on 5 May 1941 in RAF Speke by the River Mersey in Liverpool. Wing Commander E.S. Moulton-Barrett commanded the unit providing training for volunteer pilots, Fighter Direction Officers (FDOs) and airmen. After training, MSFU crews were posted to Liverpool, Glasgow or Avonmouth where they assisted in loading their Hurricanes onto the catapults. Each team consisted of one pilot for Atlantic runs (or two pilots for voyages to Russia, Gibraltar or the Mediterranean Sea) with one fitter, one rigger, one radio-telephone operator, one FDO and a seaman torpedoman who worked on the catapult as an electrician.MSFU crews signed ships articles as civilian crew members under the authority of the civilian ship's master. The ship's chief engineer became responsible for the catapult and the first mate acted as Catapult Duty Officer (CDO) responsible for firing the catapult when directed. The single Hurricane fighter was launched only when enemy aircraft were sighted and agreement was reached via hand and flag signals between the pilot, CDO and ship's master.The first four or five ships were taken into Royal Navy service as "Auxiliary Fighter Catapult Ships", and later conversions were officially named CAMs manned by merchant crews. The first CAM ship, Michael E, was sponsored by the Royal Navy while the RAF MSFUs were working up. After a trial launch off Belfast, Michael E sailed with convoy OB 327 on 28 May 1941. She was sunk by U-108 on 2 June. The first RAF trial CAM launch was from Empire Rainbow at Greenock on the River Clyde on 31 May 1941, the Hurricane landed at Abbotsinch. Six CAM ships joined convoys in June 1941. When a CAM ship arrived at its destination, the pilot usually launched and landed at a nearby airfield to get in as much flight time as possible before his return trip. Pilots were rotated out of CAM assignments after two round-trip voyages to avoid the deterioration of flying skills from the lack of flying time during the assignment.CAM sailings were initially limited to North American convoys with aircraft maintenance performed by the Royal Canadian Air Force at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. CAM ships sailed on Gibraltar and Freetown convoys beginning in September, 1941, after an aircraft maintenance unit was established at the RAF base at North Front, Gibraltar. No CAM aircraft were provided during January and February 1942 after it proved impossible to maintain the catapult-mounted aircraft in flying order during the North Atlantic winter. CAM sailings resumed on 6 March 1942 on North Atlantic convoys and in April on the Arctic Russian convoys with a RAF aircraft maintenance unit in Archangelsk. -

The Typhoon was a British single-seat fighter-bomber, produced by Hawker Aircraft. While the Typhoon was designed to be a medium-high altitude interceptor, and a direct replacement for the Hawker Hurricane, several design problems were encountered and the Typhoon never completely satisfied this requirement.[1] Other, external events in 1940 prolonged the gestation of the Typhoon (nicknamed the Tiffy in RAF slang).The Typhoon's service introduction was also plagued with problems and for several months the aircraft faced a doubtful future. However in 1941 the Luftwaffe brought the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190 into service. This meant that the Typhoon secured a new role as a low altitude interceptor. In addition the Typhoon won the support of pilots such as Roland Beamont. Through their dedication the Typhoon established itself in new roles such as night-time intruder] and a long range fighter. From late 1942 the Typhoon was equipped with bombs; from late 1943 ground attack rockets were added to the Typhoon's armoury. Using these two weapons the Typhoon became one of the Second World War's most successful ground-attack aircraft. -

Others went to No.s 402 and 409 Flights soon after. Fleet Air Arm flights were reorganized into Squadrons early in 1933, with the Nimrods joining No.s 801, 802 and and 803 Squadrons RAF.The Nimrod II followed in September 1934.Few Nimrods were exported, though one aircraft was supplied to Japan and one to Portugal. Two went to Denmark, where they were known as the Nimrodderne. They were intended as pattern aircraft for proposed licence building and were essentially Nimrod Is, though powered by Kestrel IIIS engines. One, unusually, was fitted with spats.The Nimrod had been replaced by more modern designs such as the Sea Gladiator by May 1939, before the start of World War II. -

In 1992, the Royal Air Force started a Replacement Maritime Patrol Aircraft (RMPA) procurement programme to replace the Nimrod MR2 aircraft. To meet the requirement British Aerospace proposed rebuilding each Nimrod MR2 with new engines and electronics which it called Nimrod 2000. The RAF considered bids from Lockheed with its P-3 Orion, Loral Corporation with rebuilt ex-US Navy Orions, and Dassault with the Atlantique 3.[3] In December 1996 the contract was awarded to British Aerospace for the Nimrod 2000, under the designation Nimrod MRA4.[4] British Aerospace became BAE Systems in 1999 and continued development on the Nimrod MRA4.The MRA4 was to be essentially a new aircraft. Significant changes included the installation of current-generation Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofan engines, a larger and more efficient wing, and a fully refurbished fuselage. Much larger air intakes were required on the MRA4 because the airflow requirements of the BR710 engine are significantly higher than that of the original Spey 250 powering the original Nimrods. The MRA4 also borrowed heavily from Airbus technology;[N 1] the glass cockpit was derived from the Airbus A340.[5][6]According to BAE Systems, the Nimrod MRA4 systems was to enable the crews to gather, process and display up to 20 times more technical and strategic data than the MR2. The Searchwater 2000 radar was stated to have been capable over land as well as water; with the ability to have swept an area the size of the UK every 10 seconds.[7] The Aircraft Synthetic Training Aids (ASTA) provided by Thales Training & Simulation was an electronic training suite to allow the training of crew members to transfer from active MRA4 aircraft to ground-based training systems; this change was made to increase the availability of the aircraft for operational missions and allow for more intensive training exercises.RR 30A -

A Hawker Tomtit and Hawker Demon displaying during the Shuttleworth Season Premiere & RAF Centenary Airshow 2018. Hawker Tomtit K1786, G-AFTA :-This aeroplane was the last Tomtit to be built and is the sole surviving one of its type. It was flown as a ‘hack’ during WWII by Alex Henshaw of pre-war Mew Gull fame.By 1949 it was owned by Neville Duke who displayed it regularly until he sold it to Hawker Aircraft in 1951. They presented it to the Shuttleworth Collection in 1956 and it returned to Hawker-Siddeley at Dunsfold in 1967 to be restored to its original service livery.Now owned by Demon Displays Limited, Hawker Demon K8203 was the twenty-third aircraft delivered of a third production batch of 37, built by Boulton-Paul to Specification 8/34 as amended; it was taken on charge by the RAF on 27 October 1937 and initially assigned to No 64 Squadron at RAF Church Fenton, whose livery now adorns the aircraft. It was later transferred to No 9 Maintenance Unit at RAF Cosford and then to No 9 Air Observer’s School (later renamed No 9 Bombing & Gunnery School) at RAF Penrhos. K8203 was struck off charge on 28 September 1940, but was pensioned off as a ground training aid at No 1 Service Flying Training School at RAF Netheravon; its history then becomes rather tenuous, but we understand that the aircraft was finally disposed of to No 413 (Aldershot) Squadron of the Air Training Corps, probably during 1943. The rear fuselage ended up in the RAF Museum’s storage at RAF Cardington.Hawker Demon K8203, G-BTVE :-The present owner acquired the Demon fuselage in July 1991 from AeroVintage Limited, together with a fin, rudder and tailplane, elevators, a centre-section and some parts of the wings and undercarriage; some other components were rescued from a tip in Ireland. The restoration work was entrusted to SkySport Engineering Limited, with the main criterion being that the finished aircraft should be historically accurate in every way. A great deal of time, especially during the early years, was spent in extensive research and development of ways to manufacture specialist components, some of it being carried out by sub-contractors; the Kestrel V engine was acquired in Australia. A detailed account of the 19-year restoration project can be seen in the December 2009 edition of Aeroplane Monthly.K8203’s first flight after being grounded for almost 70 years took place out of SkySport’s base near Sandy, Bedfordshire, on 23 June 2009. Test flying was completed at RAF Henlow; the Civil Aviation Authority issued the Permit to Fly at the end of the following month and the restored aircraft made its airshow debut a few days later on 2 August at the Shuttleworth Collection’s Old Warden Airfield, where the Demon is currently hangared. It continues to fly at Old Warden and other displays in the hands of pilot Stuart Goldspink, making a magnificent tribute to the immaculate engineering work carried out by the SkySport team.The reappearance of a Hawker Demon in the skies has been greeted by two major awards. The ConRod Trophy is awarded annually by the Historic Aircraft Association in recognition of an ‘outstanding contribution to the preservation and safe operation of historic aircraft’: on 21 March the 2010 ConRod Trophy was awarded to Tim Moore of SkySport Engineering for the company’s restoration and maintenance of Hawker Demon K8203. It was developed as when the Hart entered service, it was virtually uninterceptable by the RAF's fighters, which was demonstrated in air defence exercises where they were sometimes instructed to restrict their height and speed in order to give the RAF's Siskins and Bulldogs a chance.[31] While the Hawker Fury offered better performance, it was expensive and was only available in small numbers, so when a fighter version of the Hart was suggested, the Air Ministry selected the type as an interim fighter until higher performance dedicated fighters could be bought in larger numbers.[32] The new fighter variant added a second Vickers machine gun, while the coaming of the rear cockpit was angled to give a better field of fire, and a supercharged Kestrel IS engine was fitted. Evaluation of an initial batch of six aircraft, known as Hart Fighters by one flight of 23 Squadron during 1931 was successful, and larger orders followed for the fighter Hart, now known as the Hawker Demon.[33] First Flight on February 10, 1933.Boulton Paul built Demon I of 64 Squadron in 1938305 Hawker Demons were built including 232 for the RAF.[34] The Demon were powered by varying types of the Kestrel engine. It had an armament of a single rear .303 in (7.7 mm) Lewis Gun with two .303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine guns in the nose. Large numbers of the type were fitted with a hydraulically powered turret in the rear, which had been tested on the Hawker Hart. The Demon was also sold to the Royal Australian Air Force. It saw only brief second line operations during the Second World War.Production of the Demon was undertaken by Hawker and by Boulton Paul Aircraft at their Wolverhampton factory, where their last example of 106 to be completed was delivered to the RAF in December 1937.Hawker Demon I A1-8 currently at the RAAF Museum in Point Cook.
